A Sick Child Sees This Complete Stranger Walk Into The Room. Seconds Later? I’m In Tears.
Many children dream of becoming firefighters when they grow up, and why wouldn’t they? They wear cool outfits, slide down a pole to get to work, ride in a cool truck and, most importantly, save lives. But three-year-old Trucker Dukes from Hawaii loves firefighters more than anyone, and the reason why will change everything you know about these everyday heroes.
Trucker’s father is a firefighter and he’s always dreamed of following in his footsteps. So his parents set out to help make his dreams come true. Since he was just 18 months old, Trucker has been fighting an aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma. Seeking the best medical care that they could find, Trucker’s parents moved with him to New York City for further treatment, which included chemotherapy.
One day, Trucker was staying at The Ronald McDonald House, which provides housing for seriously ill children and their families, where he was recovering from his treatment. That’s when Chief Firefighter Jim Grismer walked in. Naturally, Trucker ran straight over to introduce himself. “I see this little boy excitedly walking towards me with his eyes aglow,” said Grismer. “I opened my arms and he basically climbed up and hugged me around the neck. It was as if we’ve been friends for years.”
It didn’t stop there. Trucker is now an honorary member of the New York City volunteer fire department. The fire department has developed a real friendship with Trucker. They even showed up to help him celebrate his third birthday!
