This 5-year-old with terminal cancer is smiling—fulfills wish to ‘marry’ her best friend!
After this 5-year-old lass from Scotland was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she announced her lifelong wish to “marry” her best friend. Thanks to all the kind people who supported her, the pair had a wonderful “wedding” ceremony and were declared “best friends forever.”
Eileidh is a little girl from Forres, Moray in the north of Scotland. This 5-year-old lass had always dreamed of having a fairytale wedding with her best friend, Harrison Grier, 6. When she was diagnosed with terminal neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that affects children, supporters helped make her childhood wish come true.
The child ceremony opened with a piper, followed by a procession of superheroes and princesses in a spectacle of fantastical costumes. Eileidh walked the “aisle” accompanied by her brother Callum with ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ playing in the background.
With Eileidh donning a gown and veil, her BFF, Harrison in full Scottish regalia (kilt and all), the couple stood hand-in-hand in front of a make-shift “altar,” and exchanged necklaces.
Dressed as a fairy, Zara Grant, who runs Love Rara, a children’s entertainment company, orated Eileidh’s life story in the manner of a fairytale. Gail Paterson, Eileidh’s mom had penned the lines.
Gail recalled that her daughter had been feeling a bit under the weather Saturday after having had a blood transfusion, and people were worried that she might not be able to go through with the celebration. Thankfully, the excitement cheered her up.
“She was just extremely drained, but she was like a different girl during the ceremony,” her mom said.
“The spectacle of it really perked her up, she was in her absolute element getting to play with other kids and have fun. These are going to be lasting memories.”
A poem was then read out by Eileidh’s sister, Cerys, in which she shared: “even if we are apart, I will always be with you.”
Harrison’s dad, Billy shared: “Harrison has never been to a wedding before, so this is all new to him, but it was a beautiful ceremony and he enjoyed every minute.
“He was quite excited to do it. Ever since he met Eileidh, they have been inseparable.
“I think he knew what was going on. He certainly knew how important it was to her and wanted to do whatever he could for her.”
After the charming couple was declared ‘best friends forever,’ they made their way into an auditorium, where the reception was to be held. The couple kicked off the party with a first dance to the upbeat rhythms of Gangnam Style by South Korean pop star, Psy, while the lively celebration continued with Disney hits and pop songs.
The event organizer, Ms. Grant had pulled together the whole ceremony in just 1 month.
“It was amazing to see the community come together so quickly to donate their time and services to the event,” she said. “I’ve known Eileidh ever since she was diagnosed and I’ve wanted to do everything that I can to help out her bucket list. When I saw that this was on her list, I had to find a way to make it happen.”
“This sort of event normally takes much longer to put together so to get everything done within a month was amazing…I know that Eileidh and her family are really drained from the day after they put so much energy into it.”
Eileidh’s mother has done a tremendous job in supporting her daughter throughout her ordeal as well. She had already raised £120,000 (about $150,000) in order to send her little ‘princess’ to the US for treatment; and has also campaigned to raise awareness of her daughter’s form of cancer and its symptoms.
Eileidh still has many more items on her life wish list such as swimming with dolphins and “mermaids,” as well as going to a water park and playing on the beach. And indeed, the list goes on, and includes more things such as visiting Disneyland, flying on a plane, as well as being a zookeeper for a day.
While Eileidh’s supporters do everything possible to brighten up her world, we also wish this dear princess all the love and luck in the world, and pray with all our hearts that she is able to make a speedy recovery.
